You’re on a bicycle, riding the sunrise back home from a long night out. Pinks and blues, you feel it all. Nothing before or after this matters. The breeze whispers, “you must remember and not be deceived, you are always alone and no one really needs you.” Actually, that’s Lola’s summation of the new Joobie Seaz single “Something New,” and that’s exactly the kind of candy-coated nihilism the song makes us feel. The French dreampop duo has combined forces yet again to channel their own lofi brand of glossy grime on this trip-hop/Rough Trade-inspired single. It’s been incredible to see Alex and Lola hone their craft into what it’s become, and that’s exactly why Pyrrhic Victory Recordings is stoked to be releasing their best work yet on February 3rd 2023.

“The song sounds like a mental disorder, like a bipolar disorder,” said Lola, adding, “not in the sense of a disease, but as a reminder of why we need to remain calm and self-sufficient.” In less than three minutes, Joobie Seaz takes us on a ride through Blue Screen Life-era Pinback to Portishead and back, showcasing Lola’s airy and ethereal voice through potent pop melodies. The duo has been cranking out singles since the pandemic and hasn’t stopped. They’ve garnered a loyal following over the years and we are stoked to announce their first collaboration with Pyrrhic Victory. Hop on and ride with us before the sun comes up.

A menacing, crackling sample burns slow like the tinder that revolutions are built on; a dissonant sonic explosion, and then a vehement onslaught of rhythmic indignation from a singer with a scorching predilection for social enlightenment: “Somebody taught you to hate your skin, somebody taught you to hate your lips, somebody taught you to hate yourself from within for the state that you’re in.” You’re about one minute into “Symptoms of Modern Hegemony,” the newest auditory upheaval from New Jersey’s Scary Hours, set for release on July 29th 2022 on Pyrrhic Victory Recordings.

The album, recorded at singer/songwriter Ryan Struck’s home studio over the course of the last year, is rife with moments like this, as poignant as it is profound, as catchy as it is heavy. But the lyrical topics aren’t just of a political nature; the album also addresses personal issues like grief, addiction, and isolation with one consistent message for anyone anxious about the future, whether it’s personal or political: “We scream louder when we scream together.”

The next year, Scary Hours released the folk/punk-styled Live to Serve LP, which also garnered great reviews. Since then, Ryan and Scary Hours released a more hardcore-driven single called "Bullet Fairy," and an 8-song EP called Margins, both in 2020.

The full lineup version of Scary Hours is being presented on No Echo today via "Precision Grooming," a new track (sadly) made for these times. The music video, directed by Daily Grime Media, can be seen/heard below:

Here's a statement from Ryan about the track:

“The lyrics were based on a relevant quote from the works of Carter G. Woodson: ‘When you control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand here or go yonder. He will find his 'proper place' and will stay in it.’ While we are pleased with Derek Chauvin’s conviction, we recognize that the entire criminal justice system has been designed by and for the elite white capitalist class while the working class and marginalized communities are groomed to remain powerless.

"Civil disobedience is curtailed by maintaining the American laborer’s status as an economic hostage. We really wanted to put this out for Chauvin’s sentencing date as a statement. Musically, the band combines the dissonance and heaviness of bands like Knocked Loose and Incendiary in the verses, while introducing melodic guitar harmonies in the chorus to pay homage to the skate punk and melodic hardcore groups we grew up listening to like NOFX, Leftover Crack, and Strike Anywhere.

"The video is dark and stuffy and fast and uncomfortable and we’re really stoked on how it came out. The single’s artwork is by John Steinheimer. It was so poignant that we didn’t want to just let it rot online somewhere, so we are using the 7 inch as a platform to showcase this powerful piece.”

After the release of Noctessa in May of last year, Pam Risourié unveils their third EP, So Be It, Eternity.

The Parisian shoegazers move away from the twilight dreampop of Noctessa to incorporate coldwave and post-rock elements, while mostly eschewing the sonic heritage of the ’90s in favor of a more contemporary aesthetic.

One can think of the productions of Beach House for instance, blended with a noisier, dirtier, artsy approach that hinges on the three guitarists in the band.

Big Takeover is pleased to host the premiere of the EP in its entirety today, a day before its official release date of June 11th.

Opening track “Holding You as a New Past” is based on a structuring and repetitive pattern. Its architecture evolves and thickens throughout, with interlocking guitars and sound textures moving to a shoegaze-inspired conclusion.

The ethereal voice, one of Pam Risourié’s signatures, carries the idea of passing time; it questions our ability to start over again, within the embrace of a new past.

The structure of the eponymous single, “So Be It, Eternity,” could sound like a love song, with dreampop vocals in the verses that have a sweet haunting touch. Yet the chorus and its lyrics invite us to somewhere further, in a blurry and expansive space: “All those stars in my veins / flow to the same / galaxy in shrine / and if love is mostly a shame / well, so be it, eternity now”.

“These Minds” and standout “Dystopian Eyes”, with their luxurious melody and robust bass, bring a heftier depth to this captivating effort.

So Be It, Eternity will be released on vinyl by Pyrrhic Victory Recordings (US), Engineer Records (UK), and Lofish Records*/*Araki Records in France, and on cassette with Stellar Frequencies.

This will be a double-release for Pam Risourié, with this EP followed by a live album next month. The live performance LP, titled I Only Play For You Once a Year, was captured during their show at Trabendo, Paris in September 2020, and will arrive on Hidden Bay Records.

It is a special one for us for personal reasons, but also just an incredible song by an incredible artist. Andrea is trained in classical piano, plays contemporary music, has a podcast and is also a stand up comedian.
We are excited to celebrate the re-release day of "Low" by Miss Ohio, out now everywhere (Spotify, Itunes, Tidal, Apple Music, etc)! The record, originally released in 2008 is an indie rock classic, one of too many records that at times gets overlooked or just slips past us as life moves fast and new music is released daily. If you've never heard it, you're in for a treat and if you have, you know that now is as good a time as ever to revisit it. From start to finish, this record is a piece of art that you will continue to come back to, if you're not already "in the know."

"I booked Miss Ohio at the Lakeside Lounge because I went through the stack of cd’s sent to us in the mail and really liked them. I went to see them play and they were really great. A very interesting 2 guitar band with cool songs. Miss Ohio became a staff favorite at the Lakeside. I offered to help them with their recordings and I was super happy they took me up on it and had me mix “Low”. I’m excited to learn that the record is being reissued. I sure hope you enjoy it. - Eric “Roscoe” Ambel

One of, if not the band's greatest work, has been available in only one spot (if you know where to look) online for years. On December 11, 2020 it will finally be available on Spotify, Itunes and all the streaming platforms where you listen to your music. This record is simply incredible and worth the revisit, especially as Dave is currently working on new music that we will have more updates about very soon!

"The songs on Low were written during a time of political upheaval and personal change. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were raging. The world seemed to be falling apart. At the same time, the band was settling down. Many members were getting married, starting families. The songs wrestle with the tension of balancing the personal and the political and examine the dissonance of finding personal happiness in the face of great violence and cruelty. This album was recorded by Wayne Dorell in three days at the Pigeon Club in Hoboken, NJ and mixed by Eric Ambel in Cowboy Technical Studios in Brooklyn, NY." - Dave Wilson, Miss Ohio
Pyrrhic Victory Recordingstag:pyrrhicvictoryrecordings.com,2005:Post/64885402020-11-30T13:22:47-05:002020-11-30T13:23:24-05:00New Scary Hours Video/Single & Record Premier!
We are stoked to share with you the video premier of "Worthwhile Victims" courtesy of Hardcore Worldwide, and below the record premier via The Big Takeover!

Scary Hours returns with “Margins” – an 8 song blistering hardcore punk attack that is full of anger, intensity and acute awareness and articulation, showing Struck's evolution and grasp of the reality he lives in, his disgust for many aspects of it, and his desire to be a voice of change.

Struck says himself about the record: “With no shortage of things to write about, the record came together pretty quickly. I thought “Margins” was an appropriate title as marginalization is a heavy theme on this record. For the LBGTQ and BIPOC communities, minorities, and those who seek to speak out and denounce their systemic oppression, to merely exist is an act of rebellion. The sentiment is highlighted in the title track and carried through pretty much the whole record.”

Flanked by veterans of the PA folk scene DAN MULLIGAN and RENEE ‘RAY’ DREZNER, this album rings with shimmering pedal steel, harmonies warm as a campfire, and that old grinnin’ wit sung through the nose by the Philly Hillbilly himself. For fans longing for the days of the vintage country sound floating through the jukebox dive, old-time singing circles, and boot-stomping bluegrass chops, “ALL THAT IS AND WHAT AIN’T” has it in spades. For times high or lonesome, give this one a spin and know you’ve got a pal in BUG MARTIN & CO.

Joe Pugsley spills some details about the track and video, revealing, “This song is structured around the idea of the loss of someone in your life (or the fear of such a loss), that you have a mutual love and respect for; but often struggle to find ways to sustain the relationship; the disappointment you both feel in each other for not being able to just fix it somehow, the blame, and the fear of total loss of the other.”

“The video portrays this loss in the context of a male/female relationship, but the song is more broadly about loss and disappointment, that feeling of helplessness that rips your gut. It could be associated with a lover, a friend, a relative, even a co-worker or an associate of some kind – obviously these would all have different levels of pain associated with it, but we wanted to brood in that feeling of loss and being unexpectedly let down that is simply brutal, and something I think we have all experienced and can relate to.”

“I feel we captured that pain well with this song and video (directed and edited by Neil Sabatino of Mint 400 Records). This song brought me a catharsis that has helped me immensely get past some things. It’s a reminder that we all have the power to purge and move on if necessary, but that it also just might be worth fighting for the right people. Sometimes the answers are in the pain.”

LYRICS: I wear this skin to filter from the mirror the feigning of a grin We are forebearers of malignity We are the mortgagers of dignity We are the singers of a passive song You can use your own voice but you've gotta sing along Commodify the dissident Medicate the pestilent This cost of living is more than monetary Assigned to roles unsettling, involuntary Our liberation cannot be bought with medication Is it crazy to believe we might be happy if we live another way? I tried to barter with the future But the future's been foreclosed You're as useful as a tumor Your servitude is in your best interest so why can't you be thankful? Replace the pennies in my piggy bank Targeted marketing, bullets are a surplus of fluoxetine There's an imbalance in your insolent brain Let's clear that conscience with some mental Lindane This cost of living is more than monetary Assigned to roles unsettling, involuntary Our liberation cannot be bought with medication Is it crazy to believe we might be happy if we live another way? Pull a rabbit from your hat and a dove from your sleeve Let the serotonin work as you try not to grieve This cost of living is more than monetary Assigned to roles unsettling, involuntary Our liberation cannot be bought with medication Is it so crazy to believe we might be happy if we live another way?
Pyrrhic Victory Recordingstag:pyrrhicvictoryrecordings.com,2005:Post/64321612020-09-12T16:15:09-04:002020-09-12T16:15:31-04:00l'oceanic - Dave & Jim of Miss Ohio drop 2 EPs during quarantine
l’oceanic is a collaboration between Dave Wilson and Jim Kaznosky of Miss Ohio that originated in the midst of the isolation of the 2020 pandemic.
"Since their 2011 debut LP Strike Hard!, this Lyndhurst, NJ foursome has released four EPs, plus a cover of The New York Dolls’ 1973 classic “Personality Crisis,” and each one has been a corker. This three-songer blasts even harder than their 2017 “Wolves and Men” 7”, enhanced by the addition of second guitarist Ed Roessler (Miss Ohio) to an already intimidating lineup of singer/guitarist Joe Pugsley, bassist Ryan Struck, and drummer John Steele. Propelled by explosive, jet engine-thick guitar blizzards, the galloping title track and chugging “Broken Nose, Busted Knee” reverberate like a cross between Social Distortion and Hüsker Dü, with Pugsley’s commanding, irritated bellow even recalling Mike Ness. And on the similarly ferocious “Waiting Here So Long,” his sore-throated growl summons Leatherface’s Frankie Stubbs and Swervedriver’s Adam Franklin, as it did on their 2013 I Got You and 2015 New Fun Hell EPs. Like the above bands, The 65’s are equal parts catchy and crushing." - Mark Suppanz, Big Takeover

Kingston, New York-based art rock/postpunk band Galanos return with three songs about death, figurative) wolves, and work on their new Three Songs EP, which releases soon via Pyrrhic Victory Recordings and Mint 400 Records.

The members of Galanos (Netochka Nezvanova (vocals), Gregory D. Jaw (guitar, vocals), Joe Pugsley (bass, vocals), and John Steele (drums)) don’t so much celebrate the darker things in life as they embrace the darkness life has to offer.

Big Takeover is pleased to host the premiere of the whole EP today. Galanos create a noir and gritty sound that is both urban in nature and a call of the wild. Taking their name from a combination of literary references and Spanish that when combined roughly translates to “silver tongued devils,” Galanos music is darkly seductive and coldly aloof at the same time.

Their debut 7” La Loca is steeped in the solo sounds of Stiv Bators and early Lords of the New Church, the cinematic expanses of Ennio Morricone, and relentless fuzz drone of surf guitars.

Galanos came together in 2013, after singer/songwriter Jaw (The Brides, Thee Hallowteens) completed a set of sea-soaked songs in his basement studio fueled by a need for reinvention and catharsis. His lyrics deal with loss and madness; a darkness of the heart.

Since that time Pugsley and Steele (both from NJ bands The 65’s and VOD), along with Nezvanova joined in. Following the release of their debut 7”, Galanos released their well received full-length Vacation Cannons in 2015 and acclaimed second full-length Deceiver Receiver in 2017. Big Takeover premiered the video for “Loneliest of Men” off the album.

Potent EP-opener “Take It All Away” drives on by with a devil-may-care strut and thick blasts of guitar distortion. It’s intense and emotive, with the vocals and instrumentation exuding the go-for-broke attitude of someone pushed to the brink.

“The Death of a Wolf” stalks menacingly with sharp guitar grind, supple bass line, and a shaking drum pace. The vocals are deep, but edged with a dreamier croon. A winding note extends through part of the song before breaking off into more melodic guitar jags.

The restless “Death Song” is a stream-of-conscious narrative with cycling, Beat poet-styled sing-talking vocals, wiry guitar angles, a plunging bass line, and lively drum and cymbals clatter. Stabbing organ notes infiltrate at the end, pushing the song to its urgent conclusion.

The band confide, “More material in the works as the music must be made to combat the horrors of modern civilization. The valley of death is open for business, ennui has set in, and all that is left is the song. I’m in a box, in a car, it’s so cold…”

Even more so when we learned the sad news that New York Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain is suffering from cancer, and is seeking help from friends and fans via GoFundMe.

In a nation as wealthy as the United States, we shouldn’t have to rely on GoFundMe as a way to help with medical expenses.

But we do, and our mutual disillusionment – and appreciation for the legends that created the music we love – caused us to team up with our friends at Pyrrhic Victory Recordings to release a dynamite cover of the Dolls’ “Personality Crisis,” with every penny raised from sales donated directly to Sylvain’s GoFundMe.

The 65’s banged this cover out in a day, based on a ten-minute email discussion I had with Joe Pugsley of PVR/The 65’s, and the result is every bit as raw and sleazy as a “Personality Crisis” cover should be. The members of 65’s have been making records for the better part of two decades, and have been in some of the area’s best punk bands – they were the perfect band to record this track.

It’s available for download via our webstore and also via the PVR webstore. Three bucks minimum for the track, but please consider where the proceeds are going when you click the “pay” button. We’re also making a SUPER limited run of lathe-cut 7“s – 10 copies total, split between Dromedary and Pyrrhic Victory – and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

This record was created out of anger and love and respect, and we’re proud to help the band get it out there in support of a punk legend.

BUG MARTIN is a storyteller. Born in the basement of New Jersey, Bug is a singer-songwriter who explores inner space to create moody, twangy alt-music conscious of americana, blues, roots, and folk. Bug's tunes evoke existential and confessional themes, often with tongue planted firmly in cheek. After spending several years germinating in Baltimore's bizarre arts scene where Bug wrote and recorded several self-released albums and EPs, a course has been set northbound once more to a new homestead in Philadelphia. The forthcoming album, GUTTERBALL, travels cross-genre relaying tales of hapless love and drunken wisdom stumbled upon along the way.

The title draws allusions to a famous film, and much like Dr. Strangelove, the experience is like riding an H-Bomb straight into the surface of the earth. There are hard-hitters like the lead-off Invertebrate, the punky love song She Talks Me Down, and the overcharged Pseudomania. Mellower tunes like Satan's Xmas, No Days Off, and Modern War Fair constitute the inescapable fallout amidst the explosiveness of this sophomore accomplishment. The Strange Monsters deliver the same witty and absurd indie rock as on their debut release, Destory All (sic). The band explores their versatility further by pushing boundaries and collaborating more within songs as can be heard on the shared vocals of Harveys and the sprawling closer Under My Own Power. Strange Monsters II zigzags and turns, speeds up and slows down, but most importantly, it provides a roadmap for navigating the ins and outs of the band's vision of current post-apocalyptic USA.

Elvyn Rhud

Elvyn Rhud was born when first flatmates, then couple Leo Puy and Cassandre Arpin started collaborating musically out of what was initially a solo project. Cassandre started adding percussion and vocals to Leo's drone guitar and dark vocals, which completely altered the sound and direction of the project, described by a former bandmate of Leo's as "some sort of Morricone style Gainsbourgy Bluesy thing."

Encouraged and inspired by the French musical collective Jericorp, who described the band as "A gathering of Chris Isaak, lots of love and too much Cough Syrup, playing a Western movie soundtrack with some Brian Jonestown Massacre and other psychedelic formations echoes," the band has released their first official recordings as part of this split 7": the dark and uniquely intense "Orange Is For Love" & "People In Hampton Court Don't Care About Dying," a psychedelic anthem to the land they love, where they met two years before, London.

Alpha du Centaure

Alpha Du Centaure is a French lunar post-rock quartet. Created in the south of France, it took on its current shape in 2016. Their music, tinged with shoegaze, does not conceal its influences (Slowdive, Alcest or even Mogwai) but sometimes blends them with sounds from jazz and pop music. Inspired by vast and remote lands, their melodies transport us into weightlessness.

Started as a solo project by Cédric Tessonneau, who plays the guitar, the band was soon joined by Gaël Marcou, also on the guitar. Together, they set the atmospheric and melancholic roots of the first EP. As two DIY enthusiasts, they settled in an attic in Aramon (a small village located between Nîmes and Avignon) to record their first EP called "La couleur de mes rêves" (The color of my dreams). They now return with an epic and exciting 6 minute track entitled "Le mouvement perpétuel" for their respective side of this Limited Edition split 7"

The first four tracks were included on VOD III (2014, now out of print), but now with original artwork from 1987 by one time VOD bassist Bob Craig. What makes this edition “deluxe” is the inclusion of 4 unreleased tracks from a 1988 VOD session that haven’t been heard...ever! These songs were recorded, intending to be on a full length, titled VOD II, but the band broke up shortly after it’s recording. Same lineup as the “Faith Is Torn” sessions, but with Frank Nasta on the drums and Bob Craig on bass. The master mix down tapes were held since 1988 by VOD “phantom producer” Mike Delaglio, who had “turned knobs” and financed VOD during their few recording sessions and was never credited. After a somewhat lengthy legal battle, VOD gained control of the recordings, and here they are... in all their evil glory!

Retroglyphs launched in October of 2016, and started as the ’80s-inspired project of Frank Cervantes (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, production) and Josh Dowiak (vocals, bass, keyboards, production), who had previously teamed up in the Philly-area rock band, The Once Was. The live band includes multi-instrumentalists Matthew Wood and Joshua Holland (primarily playing keyboards and drums, respectively).

The band was first introduced to the synthwave scene when the popular synthwave curators NewRetroWave added their song “The Noose” to their WeRuleNation channel. The band continued to premiere songs and gain international attention up until the release of their self-titled debut last May. Following the release of the album, the band teamed up with Pyrrhic Victory Recordings to release a limited 7” lathe-cut of their single “One More Kiss.”

Now we are excited to present this deluxe edition with these amazing remixes as well as a new Limited Edition run of CDs with incredible new artwork for those fans who still love a physical product, as the initial run has been SOLD OUT for months. Get one before they're gone!

We are excited to announce that Ithaca NY's Zero Mean has joined the PVR roster!

Hailing from Ithaca in Upstate New York, Zero Mean is a dark smoky haze of loud heavy fuzz, warble, and damaged haunting melodies that create an otherworldly atmosphere. A mix of genres mutating, noise, shoegaze, doom, drone, punk, post-punk, and metal.

Zero Mean is working hard on their next release which will be released via PVR later this year. The comeback of the 1980's band had a slight impact on the USA, but overseas ears directly pointed at this country found the band's sound and themes exciting. It was what Heinz Gerhard, the owner of the label, had been looking for to launch his new collective of bands.

As a partnership with Pyrrhic Victory Recordings, Gerhard reissued the CD with some track additions and subtractions to make it not only different but diverse from the original 2014 release. After working out the logistics, in May of 2017 VOD set out for Germany for two shows produced and promoted by Gerhard to bring the band to the waiting audiences that had discovered the band. Although the clubs were somewhat prehistoric in their venue, Gerhard arranged for state of the art recording equipment brought in to document the rare performances, and now VOD, PVR and Ungetum proudly bring you the live performances from those shows. According to EvilHeim: "It was great to come to Germany, the birthplace of my grandparents and rock the shit out of it...seeing my name on signs all over the country made me feel like I had come home."

PVR executive, and VOD bassist Joe Pugsley was quoted on asking how he enjoyed the trip, he along with guitarist Frankie Fender responded "The beer was amazing, and yeah the fans were awesome too."

Pyrrhic Victory Recording, along with Ungetum Records proudly give you "Haunting Deutschland...Voice of Doom live in Germany"

This up-and-coming label has partnered with PVR to reissue Voice of Doom's 2014 CD VOD III. The CD sold out in a matter of months after it's Halloween 2014 release, proving the "comeback" of VOD was well received and welcomed, especially in certain European markets. This flood prompted Ungetum to get involved, bringing the reissue new artwork...as well as the addition of two Misfits covers that VOD recorded for Halloween 2015, and a recently unearthed song that was originally recorded in 1988. Missing from the reissue is a track from the 2014 CD, which was originally recorded in 1987, making both the original release and the reissue a MUST HAVE for VOD fans! According to PVR and VOD representatives the band is scheduled to do a short German tour in the spring of 2017, and hoping to get some live shows recorded for a possible future release as well.

Of course, there are initial visions of success and fame, but pretty quickly you realize that those are just dreams. Most often, bands come together, record an album, make a push, get discouraged or start to fight internally, and break up. Then they go get real jobs or start families and assimilate into adult life.

Those of us who keep at it find something else to motivate us beyond those initial desires. For Miss Ohio, those motivating factors have always been clear. First, it’s the joy of creating something with your friends. It saddens me that most adults likely never have that experience. All of the songs in the Miss Ohio catalog started as simple acoustic demos that were then built up, molded and transformed by the collective vision of each individual member. If there’s one single reason this band has lasted so long, it’s the pure luck of having good, smart people in the band. When Jim and I started writing songs in his attic, it was really just because we were friends and wanted to hang out together. When we met Pietro and Brandon, it wasn’t their musicianship that got them into the band, it was that they were good, funny people we enjoyed being around. When Ed came along, we didn’t even know if he could play bass, we just knew that we liked being around him. And our pal Paul Sherard, who has bailed us out on more than one occasion, is, beyond being an absolutely amazing musician, a pleasure to have around.

Over the years, this has extended to those we have met either by playing with their bands or meeting them at shows. When you get to be our age, people stop thinking it’s cool that you are in a band and start to say things like “you’re still playing music? Good for you!” For those of us who stick at it, there is a certain camaraderie and shared affection that is very much like being in a secret society. Despite that hardships and mild indignities that come with being in a rock band, there really is nothing better. There are many, many great bands out there making great music. I’m proud to call some of them my friends.

The other thing that has kept this band going is the joy of having a secret life. Miss Ohio has never been a traditionally successful band. We don’t sell a lot of CDs. We don’t bring a lot of people to shows. Still, that hasn’t ever changed how we approach the band. In my mind, Miss Ohio is a band that matters. In my most whimsical moments, I imagine some future person stumbling upon one of our songs and discovering that there is an entire discography waiting to be discovered. If that never happens, I’m just as happy to know that someday I’ll look back on all of this as a sort of diary. It is, literally, the soundtrack of my life, or at least my life over the last decade and a half (even as I type that I think “that can’t be true!”)

I’ve never done anything as long as I’ve been in Miss Ohio. It’s almost startling to consider how much different my life is now from when Jim and I first got together to make music. Most of the bands we have played with broke up long ago. Most of the clubs we have played are closed down. No matter. The songs keep coming. The fellas keep showing up to practice. Our friends keep finding places to book shows.

-Dave Wilson

White Hot : The Best of Miss Ohio by Miss OhioPyrrhic Victory Recordingstag:pyrrhicvictoryrecordings.com,2005:Post/42618512016-07-03T17:04:16-04:002017-01-15T21:50:48-05:00STILLWATER GAZETTE APRIL 11, 2016
MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF LOCAL RESIDENT PROMPTS DEEPER INVESTIGATION

The untimely passing of a local man in October of 2015 created a world of concern for his family. Karl C Scott, formerly of Stillwater, took his unannounced vacation to Santa Mira, California that month, and was involved in a fatal car accident. This sparked a wave of investigation by his siblings, looking for explanations of why their "eccentric" relative would seek out fictional characters and landmarks after joining the band Voice of Doom in 2014.

"He was always a bit of an adventure seeker, and down deep a true adventure and sci-fi lover but we all hoped he had put that part of himself behind him." said Katherine Scott-Gleason, Karl's surviving sister. "We all feel his getting back into a band dragged him back to his days of make-believe and we all tried so hard to guide him into staying a responsible adult and pillar of the community."

Scott was drumming for the band VOD and family members feel that after reading some of the song titles on their debut cd VOD III that Karl had slipped back into his "old ways" of adventuring off by himself to look for places and things that don't exist anymore or never existed to begin with. Joseph T. Reitzman, an independent investigator is heading up the investigation and first order of business is to question members of VOD and their record label Pyrrhic Victory Recordings to find some clues and if possible to get some answers into what may have caused Scott to take his trip and cause his death. A representative for PVR had no comment at this time on the investigation but did respond to inquiries with "Buy our products and tell your friends."

Pyrrhic Victory Recordingstag:pyrrhicvictoryrecordings.com,2005:Post/42618472016-07-03T16:59:33-04:002018-04-19T17:50:04-04:004/9/15 - 'LOST', the new album by The Subterraneans is OUT NOW

Your humble journalist was pleased as punch to receive VOD III in 2014, and here I am again burning up my speakers with this new 4 song basher. The Doom boys had a rough 2015 though, with the loss of their bassist (again) and the unusual death of their drummer in northern California, but true to form, a regroup with Joe Pugsley on bass and Ryan Struck on drums, and they're back. Heim, Steele and Fender along with the revamped rhythm section have given us more reason to check under our beds at night.
After releasing their well received debut LP "Strike Hard!" in 2011 via Dromedary Records, and an extended single/EP for the track 'I Got You' in 2013, the band had done some sporadic recording sessions with Kevin Lacatena at Homebrew Studio in Sparta NJ, but they only recently went in to finish some of the material. "It just seemed like the right time." says singer/guitarist/songwriter Joe Pugsley. "Admittedly, I needed some time away from the project, and it didn't help that the songs we were working on were so dark. The content is heavy, there's a lot of anxiety and anger in these tracks. That alone made it somewhat laborious to complete, the heaviness and the need to get the songs right. These aren't happy, carefree songs; and I needed them to encapture the content accurately."

The new 3 song EP entitled "New Fun Hell" will be released 11/17/15 via Pyrrhic Victory Recordings, the new label/collective started in 2013, another project the bands' members have been heavily involved with. "The idea of the label was to be a sort of anti-label." explains John. "The avatar without the headache, the contracts. It's straight up DIY so it's a lot of hard work, but all the bands we work with have access to whatever tools we have at our disposal as well as complete artistic freedom for their release to be presented and approached in whatever way they are comfortable with. Having initially started as an outlet for our friends and our music, in a couple years we have artists from Pittsburgh to France, so it seems the approach resonates with others, which is great." Plans for shows to support the release are in the works.

Shortly after recording, the original bassist decides obscurity is a better suited activity for him, and the new drummer drives to his death in northern California. So what happens next? Well, the remaining 3 recruit a familiar but new rhythm section and continue...the result is the upcoming 4 song EP titled "Scared to Death" recorded once again with Kevin Lacatena at Homebrew Studio and available through PVR soon. To quote a passerby of the studio during the sessions, the anonymous citizen said "I thought it sounded like someone getting put into a meat grinder in there. Initially they were just as raucous as Bernie's, playing fast, aggressive punk, and their first demo reflected that with songs like "Stray Bullets" (which also appeared on the 'Anarchy In The N.J. Compilation Vol 1' put out by Umbilical Records in 97). As they played, they refined their sound and added more pop and straight rock elements, and eventually went in to Big Blue Meenie in Hackensack and recorded a 6 song EP with Jerry Jones of The Fiendz engineering, but the band broke up shortly after and the EP got shelved. Until now.

Thankfully for recent online correspondence between old friends and bandmates, the songs were unearthed, and we are excited to present them to you now for the very first time, as a free download/stream. For those who were around back then, we hope these songs bring you back a bit, as they do for us, and for those who weren't, we hope you enjoy hearing them for the first time. It's 1997 all over again...here's to feeling good, all the time!

That band is Voice of Doom. They released new material along with a remastered collection of their first EP in what looked like a promising comeback for the aging Jersey boys...but in true "Spinal Tap" fashion if I may say so, they unfortunately lost their drummer to a mysterious accident in northern California, and their bass player has decided AARP was a better choice of letters than VOD.

For their debut live performance on April 18 at the Clash Bar in Clifton they didn't have to look far for replacements though. Steele and Fender turned to fellow 65's bandmates Joe Pugsley and Ryan Struck to take over bass and drum duties, respectively. According to Steele, the band is "tighter, louder and a little further from retirement age". Fender was quoted as saying "Karl would have wanted it this way...he was selfless like that". I'll be there and you should be too...also appearing is Electric Frankenstein (who Steele drummed for for many years) along with the Catholic Girls.

Pyrrhic Victory Recordingstag:pyrrhicvictoryrecordings.com,2005:Post/42616182016-07-03T12:49:50-04:002016-07-03T12:49:50-04:004/4/2015 - New single by Don Strange!
We are happy to present the new single "O' Waimea" by Pittsburgh singer-songwriter Don Strange from his upcoming "Are You Johnson?"
Don Strange & The Doosh Bears have been a staple of the Pittsburgh music scene for a few years now. They have released 2 full length albums since 2012 including this year's "Pierre," and already have another in the works which PVR will release later this year. They have performed at Pittsburgh's RANT Festival, Deutschtown Music Festival, Club Cafe, Gooski's, Parkside Lounge (NYC), Arlene's Grocery, WYEP, and many other venues, dive bars, and radio sessions. As Pittsburgh City Paper put it: "Strange is one of our more intriguing local entries right now; any survey of the Pittsburgh music scene should probably include this endearing outlier."
"We don’t even know what happened to him. He just disappeared and never came home.”

This was the response to our question from neighbors and co-workers of Karl C. Scott, 58 of Stillwater, NJ who has been missing for over a week. According to his manager at work he hasn't shown up for over a week now, and no one seems to be able to reach him via telephone or at his home.

His disappearance was noticed mostly, and brought to our attention by his bandmates in Voice of Doom, who became especially concerned when he didn't show up for band practice. The band had recently recorded together and are rehearsing for future shows, which has halted due to Scott's disappearance.

Neighbors of Scott told us that Scott had been mentioning something about taking vacation to Santa Mira, California soon, but couldn't get a clear indication of where in California that actually is. Residents of the town are hoping if he is on vacation, he is enjoying his trip and returns safely.

Members of his band Voice of Doom refused comments upon hearing the news.
Pyrrhic Victory Recordingstag:pyrrhicvictoryrecordings.com,2005:Post/42615482016-07-03T11:47:40-04:002020-10-26T01:16:01-04:00leaked review: Bob McCreary / Blood Makes Noise fanzine / Fall 2014 edition
"Wait a minute, where am I? What year is this?? Where are we going Friday night, The Dirt Club? Aldo's? Sneekers in Passaic? No this isn't the 80's anymore. Dynasty isn't on primetime. Moonlighting isn't the biggest hit of the season...so WHY is Voice of Doom releasing new material? Who asked for this? I guess when I asked for a Commodore 64 I got Windows 8 instead. But it's true, the Doom club has reformed (not sure if it's for good this time) but long enough to make some new noise. One thing that's different right off the top is the new "Voice". Mr Steele has relinquished his vocal duties to the one named demon "Evilheim" and from what I've heard so far, they're pretty angry about cereal and lesser liked horror movies from the 80's and 90's. I guess in a way they're doing what every good horror punk band does, but this time it's got a splash of hard rock, less metal and tongue planted firmly in cheek. Not taking themselves too seriously, but still putting everything on 10. Gone from the folds is London May on drums but the core is still there, so it's not a VOD cover band at least. That's one thing to be happy about. Nice to see guys from that era still alive. I think there's enough room in the world for a throwback treat...it's slated for a Halloween release on PVR recordings, so get yourself a nice big bowl of monster cereal, put the Halloween marathon on your TV and crank up VOD. Just don't go looking for the clubs I mentioned, they are looooooong gone."

-Bob McCreary, Aug 2014
Pyrrhic Victory Recordingstag:pyrrhicvictoryrecordings.com,2005:Post/42615432016-07-03T11:45:07-04:002017-01-15T21:50:47-05:00"Reflections of Doom" by London May
"REFLECTIONS OF DOOM"

I was 19 in 1987 and I'd been canned from yet another minimum wage gig. I imagined a big payday drumming with Samhain was imminent so I didn't care much about looking for a new job. So I loafed around Bergen County, New Jersey shopping for monster toys and dreaming of gold records until my savings finally ran out. When my entrepreneurial brain storm to cat-sit for Glenn Danzig didn't pan out (no joke) I took the first cash ($100) that another band threw at me in order to pay the rent. That band was Voice of Doom and it was a one-show one-deal type thing, and since Samhain bassist Eerie Von had help set it up I didn't feel I was being too disloyal or sneaky within Glenn's tight knit group. Even new Samhain guitarist John Christ, who was staying with me at the time, accompanied me to my first rehearsal. So, one chilly Winter night Voice of Doom guitarist/vocalist John Steel drove us to some basement in his red Camaro where we met with lead guitarist Frankie Fender, who ironically played a Gibson knock off, and mustachioed bassist Ricky who was yet to be christened with the uber-metal surname of BLADES. John had a Lilly Munster tattoo so we were best friends from "Yo". It was a motley bunch but we got down to business, quickly blasting through a set of original metal-tinged hardcore and a cover of "Symptoms of the Universe." I remember being especially sucky on the Sabbath song but we soldiered through, getting better and tighter with each subsequent jam session.

To my surprise I was canned from Samhain right before my big show with Voice of Doom. I'm sure it was not directly related but in retrospect I feel it didnt help an already volatile situation that was ongoing with me and Glenn. The VOD gig was good and my rent got paid but I was quite bummed obviously. The Doom boys on the other hand were ecstatic and I was quickly deputized to member status. We went on to play the legendary CBGB's which was a thrill and I later recorded the super rare Faith Is Torn 7" with them. Eventually I got an offer to play with some more established lads in DC and I moved East to pursue that.

What I thought initially was a quick cash grab with Voice of Doom turned into something I'm quite proud of and I'm especially grateful for the enduring friendship I've had with John all these years.

John and Frankie have resurrected VOD this year with a new line up and some long awaited new songs. A very close chum of mine, Holeshot's Evilheim, is now on vocals and it's guaranteed to pulverize. I hope everyone enjoys their new tracks and I wish them the best of luck. It's been nice to reminisce about the good old times I had with this band. Much love to John and the boys!
